Mefab Modular Living lands prestigious contract for Moon Village

If the moon was just a step away, would we all decide to hop on and stay? MEFAB Modular Living, the new name in space for Leisure, Living and Events, are excited to announce plans to create the very first Moon Parc using their innovative, energy independent, factory built modular buildings. Using the latest smart tech and modern methods of construction, MEFAB buildings have low to zero operational energy costs and are an ideal choice for an out of this world experience. Creating the very first Moon Parc leisure stays, project manager, Wallan Gormit, (an inventor and cheese connoisseur from Yorkshire), said “This is an amazing opportunity to inspire a whole new leisure stay trend which would be impossible without the innovative MEFAB concept. You would think that staying at Moon Parc would lack atmosphere but the healthy indoor environment of the MEFAB building, extremely efficient thermal properties, and the added bonus of being self-powered makes this future possible. And just look at the views you will get!”

No prices for a stay in Moon Parc have yet been released but it is rumoured that the flagship two storey three-bedroom Eagle unit will be around $10 miliion per night, (plus tariffs), with a minimum stay of 28 nights, including VIP return travel. This will also include use of the electric MEBUGGY which self-charges using energy from the MEFAB building so you can explore living on another planet.

Energy Independence – the cost effective approach

The recent announcement of a 6.4% increase of the energy price cap for the period covering April to June 2025 demonstrates the difficulties faced without having what we refer to as ‘energy independence’. In a crazy world where the cost of renewable energy is related to wholesale gas prices, even purchasing electricity from renewable sources will not escape the continuing hike in prices. That is why when we created the MEFAB concept it was a high priority that energy independence must be integrated into every design. Not just to provide off grid capability, but to ensure that operational cost would be in control of the owner, and that operational cost could be low to zero.

According to most UK energy providers, the average energy cost for a one-bedroom detached house (considered a “low” usage profile) is around £105 per month or approximately £1,260 per year. This is based on typical gas and electricity consumption for a small household. These costs can vary due to variable factors like insulation, heating habits, location, and of course the energy tariff from your chosen supplier. For a 3-bedroom detached house in the UK the average annual energy cost is around £1,850 which translates to roughly £154 per month for a combined gas and electricity bill. These average costs are based on a modern home and would not take into account the less efficient older homes, lodges and static caravans. For these buildings expect double or triple those figures.

So, what if you were in control of your own energy cost? In the all-electric future home, even if you are running electric space heating, electric water heating and charging your electric vehicle, the energy independent MEFAB design would be generating and storing energy, meaning you would not need to be purchasing much, if any, electricity. The energy generated by your MEFAB building is yours to use as you want in the most efficient way. And supplied (generated) free of charge!

Flexible Servicing

Now imagine several MEFAB buildings on a leisure park, as holiday homes, as temporary site accommodation or as student living, all generating and storing energy with the added bonus of using ‘flexible servicing’, balancing energy demand between buildings using ‘active management’ smart systems. This will not only reduce your energy costs as a landlord/contractor/leisure park operator, but using a ‘flexible connections’ approach could even offer a revenue stream from your District Network Operator through helping to balance grid demand. As energy is now one of the biggest operational costs, including energy independence as part of your project design will lead to a very good return on investment figure.

This cost-effective approach using energy independence is at the heart of the MEFAB concept.

MEFAB. The story so far……….

The MEFAB Concept was created from an idea and desire to construct a modular A-frame building using a hybrid lightweight steel and insulated panel structure, combining experienced engineering and architectural design skills. The building is designed as an all-electric smart ‘active building’ that generates and stores energy, giving the opportunity for zero energy cost, reduced carbon footprint and reduced infrastructure cost.

Why?

The existing holiday lodge and park homes market appears to be lacking in true innovation, especially in terms of sustainability, energy efficiency and quality of construction. Our idea was to be able to create something different, something unique, that would be manufactured in a quality-controlled factory environment. Designed and manufactured in a similar way to modern electric vehicle production.

Modern consumers are increasingly seeking unique experiences that go beyond the ordinary. There is a growing demand for something different, something with a visual, ethical or quirky edge. In an era of heightened environmental consciousness, ethical considerations play a significant role in traveler’s decision making, seeking out modern, sustainable designs that will set a site apart and offer an unparalleled experience.

Flexible Architecture.

MEFAB stands for Modular Electric Flexible Architecture Building. Offering a choice of configurations from standard components, the MEFAB Flexible Architecture platform means that a building can be designed as a single module or as multiple modules to give a choice of sizes and spaces. This design approach allows us to have a building constructed and ready for use within a short timescale. A building that can be disassembled, extended or adapted as future needs change. A building with a zero-carbon footprint and manufactured with zero to minimal waste. The MEFAB concept means that, in addition to developing our own ‘standard’ range, we can employ our innovative design principles to manufacture energy independent self powered buildings to suit your own design, supplying you with factory built modular accommodation that will save you time, infrastructure cost, and improve return on investment.

Energy Independence.

Being an all-electric building allows the opportunity for self-generated energy consumption, reducing site infrastructure needs and eliminating the need for the usual ‘off grid’ LPG heating from gas boilers, refueling oil tanks for oil boilers, and all other associated costs with flame and flue emission boilers.

A MEFAB space is designed as a ‘zero emission’ building that is healthy, safe and very low cost to run. The building also includes integrated Electric Vehicle charging and energy storage.

The Prototype.

MEFAB have spent years carefully evaluating and developing many design details and now have a full size prototype in construction. Combining traditional and modern methods of design, our working prototype is almost complete and will soon be ready for site evaluation and viewing.

Industro Christmas Darts with ‘Duzza’

Industro Engineering Group recently had a fun evening with local professional darts player Glen ‘Duzza’ Durrant where staff enjoyed the challenges set by the former World Champion. Taking place at the excellent venue of Whinstone View, Great Ayton, the pre-Christmas event saw several challenges, including nine darts and match the score, resulting in prizes being awarded by Glen. Some Lucky staff managed to walk away with ‘Duzza’ shirts and sets of ‘Duzza’ darts, including a set from a championship match!

Supported by the Industro Engineering Group, Glen commented on how much he appreciated the support and said it was great to be able to give something back, enjoying social events such as this. MEFAB Design Director Stuart Duckett even managed to come away, (surprisingly), with a set of ‘Duzza’ darts!

A Winning Team!

The final three rounds of the 2024 British Talent Cup Championship took place at Donington Park last weekend where MEFAB supported Harley McCabe took his first victory! Riding for the MLav team in a two meeting deal, the weekend was a fantastic way to round off what has been a challenging year for the young rider from Yorkshire. Harley hit the front in race two after just a few laps then pulled away to seal victory by a few seconds. Race three, and the final race of season, was full of action with five riders battling for the podium places. After a last lap and last corner move, Harley went from fourth to second, securing another podium finish.

There is now a few months break, planning for the 2025 season, and we can’t wait to see what plans are announced for next year!

MOTO GP Weekend

August and the usual summer escape to Silverstone for the British round of Moto GP 2024 for our Design Director Stuart Duckett. This year looking forward to seeing the MEFAB Modular Living brand on track as part of the British Talent Cup races!

Cold weather and damp conditions were challenging both on track and on the campsite. During qualifying MEFAB supported rider Harley McCabe was taken out after just a handful of laps meaning a frantic overnight re-build of the bike to be ready for racing. Sadly on the race day warm up lap a mechanical issue prevented taking the start leaving a distraught Harley and the team having to watch the race from the track side.

Off track it was good to take the opportunity to marvel at the engineering ingenuity of the ’75 Years’ exhibition showcasing racing bikes from 1949 to 2024!

MEFAB starts prototype manufacture

Following a recent relocation of the Industro Engineering Group to a larger fabrication and manufacturing facility close to the Port of Middlesbrough, MEFAB have commenced manufacture of their prototype in a dedicated space within the unit which will allow design evaluation, refinement of materials, choices for interiors, and decisions on smart tech, as the full size model is constructed.

From Ideas to Prototype.

Creative innovation and attention to detail are the two main elements we love at MEFAB. There is always a long period between initial ideas and the finished item during which time a talented design team will create a new generation of modular building; the self powered MEFAB Modular Living

The MEFAB process started with an idea, (actually quite a few), from which outline sketch drawings were created. Using freehand sketches and computer software, ideas from the mind become visible for the very first time. The best ideas and drawings were then developed into a design concept for a two level unit that would be suitable for leisure or living, along with the challenging task of how to turn this concept into a modular factory finished product ready for transportation and site installation.

Creating the first prototype

Although we produced a few simple 1:25 scale models to help with assessing three dimensional proportions and suitability for manufacture, we decided that our prototype should be a full size working unit, and refined the concept so that we could create a single module unit not only suitable for prototype evaluation, but a product we could use for site evaluation as a self powered ‘glamping’ or event space.

Developing the interior and exterior

The interior is initially designed as a 3D drawing rendered to create some realistic interior concepts along with an animated ‘walk thru’ video. The development of the design in three dimensions helps us to see the product from the inside out, as it were, helping to give a sense of maximising usable space.

Selection of materials and colours for internal and external finishes, in addition to hidden structural and fabric elements, required many hours of careful consideration. Talking to manufacturers to evaluate cost against performance and visual appeal, from hundreds of choices, took many months before we finally shortlisted our preferred partner suppliers. As the core of the MEFAB ethos is sustainable living, sourcing materials with environmental accreditations is a high priority.

The final Stage

This is when we see the results of exterior and interior choices are merged into a single prototype model. The result of a team of specialists that have put together lots of individually produced component parts like a huge puzzle, recording every detail, every change, as we prepare for smart manufacturing with a high degree of quality and consistency.

As we approach completion of the working unit we will be evaluating potential partner sites who can have the opportunity to be the very first to enjoy the future and the many benefits of MEFAB Modular Living. Will that be you?

MEFAB on the grid at British Superbike Events

The MEFAB Modular Living name was seen for the first time on the track at Navarra Circuit in northern Spain as testing got underway for the 2024 season.

Testing was followed by the first three rounds of the 2024 British Talent Cup which saw MEFAB supported Harley McCabe score his first championship points of the season with a first race fifth, race two 17th and race three 11th. Mixed fortunes but it is a long season ahead!

We are looking forward to attending most of the British Talent Cup races held at the high profile British Superbike events and seeing the MEFAB Modular Living name on the grid!
